This year, it’s also an important juncture in the life of our Institute, as we prepare to hold our annual general meeting virtually. This event gives us the chance to present the results of the last year, review our current orientations and confirm the vitality of our organization.
Beyond its statutory role, the AGM is, above all, an event that brings us together. It reminds us that the Institute is carried by its affiliates and that its development relies on the mobilization, participation and trust of an engaged and active professional community.
A profession undergoing renewal
The vibrancy of a profession is also measured by its capacity to welcome newcomers and inspire them to build their future within it.
On May 2, we had the pleasure of celebrating the arrival of 142 new graduates of the fall 2025 Professional Training Course. This is the biggest cohort since 2020, and that’s a very encouraging signal for the future of the profession.
With nearly 40% of practising financial planners on the far side of 50, this next generation has an essential role to play. They will help ensure the continuity of the profession and its evolution, by bringing in new perspectives and new methods.
Developing competencies for the long run
Welcoming our successors is one thing. Ensuring they can develop and flourish in the profession is another.
The Institute is standing by its commitment to support financial planners in the development of their practice and the continual advancement of their competencies to assist them in a constantly changing professional environment.
Professional development is an integral part of this reality. The last cycle ended on November 30, 2025, and a new two-year cycle has begun. During this period, financial planners have to earn 40 professional development units.
The beginning of the cycle offers an important opportunity to intentionally plan your professional development. Too often, training is concentrated toward the end of the period, which limits choices and adds pointless pressure.
On the other hand, taking the time to plan right away lets you make choices that are more aligned with your practice, spread out your efforts and take full advantage of training opportunities that are offered. It’s also a way to turn professional development into a true lever for progress.
Fall: A time to learn and gather
Next fall will offer an ideal chance to engage in this process when, for the first time, the Institute’s annual congress is jointly held with the Université Laval’s Chaire IG Gestion de patrimoine en planification financière symposium, from September 16 to 18, at the Delta Trois-Rivières.
This combination offers enriched programming that addresses issues that are very present in our day-to-day affairs (business transfer, retirement, taxation, investments, family business, cryptoassets), in various formats that encourage both learning and discussion.
It also provides an opportunity to build a training package that reflects your needs, based on your own professional reality.
Making progress together
Events and courses aside, the true strength of our profession is our capacity to learn, adapt and share our experiences.
Now, in mid-year, I want to encourage you to take a moment to consider your professional development, your goals and how you will achieve them. Whether it is planning your courses, welcoming the next generation or taking part in the Institute’s activities, every action counts.
As my term as Board Chair comes to a close, I find myself thinking about how this capacity to evolve – individually and collectively – is what allows our community to thrive.
Together, we are advancing financial planning.
