I am calling up these memories because it’s essential to raise the topic of our future by talking about the next generation of financial planners and the moments when we can represent the future of the profession. As is true in many other professions, preparing for sound succession is crucial to protect the longevity and expansion of our field. Today, this is even more important. Let me explain why and, more importantly, how you can contribute to the advancement of our current situation and help shape the future of our profession.
In the last ten years, we have seen a growth of 3.35% in the number of F.Pls. But every year, almost that same number of professionals retire.
Currently, 40% of F.Pls. are over 50. During that same decade, the Québec population over the age of 19 increased by 11%.
If that gap continues, we’ll no longer be able to meet growing demand, at a time when needs are increasing. With such a low growth rate in the number of financial planners in Québec, many Québec families will not have access to our services, even though it has been clearly demonstrated that our support improves their financial resilience.
Several years ago, the Institute launched a number of initiatives to attract new people to the profession. We changed our brand identity to communicate an image that resonates more with the next generation. Our actions include:
- Creating a new website for the Institute
- Developing our presence on social media and launching a new succession campaign
- Signing agreements with student associations and participating in Omnium Financier
- Launching the Institute’s ambassador program
- Signing a partnership with Académos
- Holding open-house days for future practitioners
- Rolling out the Financial Planning Discovery path
- Awarding a new Academic Merit prize for financial planning students
- Giving out dozens of scholarships to promising students
- Creating the Recruit of the Year award and offering a Mentorship grant to new graduates
- Offering half-price Congress passes to new F.Pls.
I want to thank all the financial planners who are getting involved with our successors, particularly the ambassadors who are posting content, taking part in job fairs and making presentations to students or professionals in career transition, and the mentors working with Académos.
Your commitment is invaluable, and the results are clear: enrolments in the Executive Program are increasing constantly, as are applications for the Professional Training course. This fall, a record number of students took the exam. And I dare to believe that this is just the beginning!
The future of our profession is everyone’s business. It will be a critical issue in our next strategic plan, which I will have the pleasure of presenting at our Congress next November. But this challenge is not ours alone: it affects our entire community. We believe in our profession and the positive impact of our support on the lives of Québecers. That has to outlive us.
So I encourage you to get involved. There are so many ways you can contribute, and every action helps! The objective is to spread the word and tell more people about our profession. Together, we can do it! And who knows? Maybe you will be that crucial person who helps someone else choose a career as a financial planner!
